Science Traverse

WISSARD will use a newly implemented capability of the US Antarctic Program (USAP) for traversing science project personnel and equipment large distances over the snow.  Over the last decade, the USAP has established modern traverse infrastructure to support the operational requirement to move fuel and equipment to the South Pole, and retrograde cargo back to McMurdo Station.  This is a more efficient way to move heavy cargo than by aircraft, and is less subject to variable weather conditions.  In order to support WISSARD, and future science projects, the USAP has supplemented the operation traverse fleet with additional equipment that can be dedicated to science.
